"Sock It to Winter!"

The Sock it to Winter Sock/Underwear drive for the PCM Homeless Prevention Center is in full swing! As of this writing, we have collected 18 packages of socks and 9 packages of underwear, with more inbound from the Amazon wish list and individual contributions.

Our friends at Goldenrod Printing will be donating some items as well.

We have until January 11, but if you have ordered from the wish list or are waiting to see Carra or another board member to give your items to, Carra will wait a couple of days before dropping off our donation. Just drop Carra a note with this information.

Thank you to all that have donated and will be donating. Again, the Amazon wish list is at:

Code of Conduct

Lincoln Atheists is working on a Code of Conduct. Based largely on American Atheists' Code of Conduct as a starting point a draft has been created. Read the current draft here. Post comments and suggestions in the comment section. Let's work together to create something we can all agree on. You can sign in with your Facebook, Google, or Twitter account.

Reason this Season

We got a lot of press, a few new members (both paid and to the facebook group), spread our message of the importance of separation of church and state, the opportunity to display our billboard in a venue where it could not be taken down by bullying, and most importantly we let some more of our fellow atheists to know that they are not alone.

Events

  • Sock and underwear Drive thru Jan 11th donations to Community Service Committee
  • Weekly Coffee and Conversation on Sunday at Meadowlark Coffee & Espresso
  • Tabletop Gaming Jan 6th and 21st at Gauntlet Games
  • Monthly Meetup Jan 11th at The Eatery
  • Bar Trivia Jan 19 at Brewsky's South

Code of Conduct - Draft

Below is a draft for Lincoln Atheists Code of Conduct. We are looking for suggestions for the final draft. You can comment below.

Lincoln Atheists is committed to presenting an environment that is fun, friendly, and informative for all members and event participants.

This includes creating an atmosphere that is sex-positive
and harassment-free. All members and event participants are required to adhere to our code of conduct for all Lincoln Atheists events and while interacting in Lincoln Atheists online spaces.
  • Lincoln Atheists does not tolerate harassment of or by members or event participants in any form. Prohibited conduct may include, but is not limited to, harassment related to gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age, religion, sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention.
  • Racist, sexist, classist, ableist, homophobic, or transphobic conduct will not be tolerated.
  • Lincoln Atheists recognizes that derision of religion, and religious ideology, can be quite common at its events and we welcome such discussions. However, the harassment of individuals for their religious beliefs will not be tolerated.
  • Lincoln Atheists understands that human interaction can be quite complex and confusing. Please give each other the benefit of explaining behavior you find offensive or unwelcome. However, participants asked to stop any prohibited conduct are expected to comply immediately.
  • Lincoln Atheists welcomes families with children and expects all event participants to treat these families with courtesy and respect. Parents or guardians bringing children are responsible for their children’s behavior. Parents or guardians should be aware not all Lincoln Atheists events may be suitable for children. An event that is deemed unsuitable for children will be indicated as so in the event description.
  • To ensure that all members of the atheist community are welcome at our events, Lincoln Atheists is consciously working to create a safe space for members of the LGBTQ community. Please listen to LGBTQ people’s needs and stories when they are volunteered; but please respect people’s privacy and boundaries and do not ask questions that you wouldn’t ask of anyone else. Do not make assumptions about other people’s gender identity or expression. Do respect and call people what they ask you to call them.
Failure to abide by our code of conduct will result in ejection from Lincoln Atheists event (without refund if there is a charge for event) at the sole discretion of event organizers. Repeat offenses will result in offending individual(s) being banned from all future Lincoln Atheists events.

If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact an event organizer immediately. Event organizers will help participants contact local law enforcement, provide escorts, or otherwise assist those experiencing harassment to feel safe for the duration of the event. We value your attendance and participation at Lincoln Atheists events.

"Sock It to Winter!"

Running from December 17th (Member Meeting) through January 11th (Monthly Meetup) Lincoln Atheists is organizing a Sock and Underwear Drive for the Homeless Prevention Center run by People's City Mission (PCM).  PCM is currently the best place in Lincoln for the homeless or near homeless to get resources they need with the least amount of hassle.

They are, however, always short of socks and underwear.  To be donated, these items need to be new, so not many pairs get donated.  With holiday sales coming up, we should be able to find some good deals on some socks and underwear for all ages and genders.  We had great success last year, donating 27 packs of underwear and 60 packs of socks. Let's do it again!

For those of you that prefer to shop online, we have updated the Amazon Wishlist for the LA Community Service Committee to include socks and underwear.

All donations can be given to Carra McClelland at Coffee and Conversation, Tabletop Gaming, or the Monthly Meetup. They can also be dropped off on Carra's porch or given to any board member.

  • Weekly Coffee and Conversation on Sunday at Meadowlark Coffee & Espresso

  • Monthly Meetup Dec 14th at The Eatery

Reason this Season

Lincoln Atheists, along with Omaha Atheists, will again have a Reason this Season display in the Nebraska State Capitol Building during the upcoming holiday season. Our display advocates for the separation of church and state, so important in maintaining a free society where everyone is free to believe and worship, or not, as they see fit. Included with our static display will be an Ask an Atheist table where individuals are free to ask questions and talk with non-believers, something many people have never had the chance to do. It is a great opportunity for us to interact with the public in a very positive way.

Our display will be in the Capitol building the week before Christmas, running from Monday, December 19th through Saturday, December 24th. The Ask an Atheist table will be open from 8 am to 5 pm each day. We are in need of volunteers to cover that time. Shifts are just 1 or 2 hours each. We want to have 2 people (at least) at the table at all times so no one has to be there alone.

I know that this time of year can be quite hectic and weekday times can often be difficult to get away. Any time that you can assist would be greatly appreciated.

To volunteer click here and add your contact information to the dates and times you are available.

If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact Brian at brian@lincolnatheists.org.
